We’ve become so confused in this country by mainstream media hammering away at us to avoid fat because it makes us fat, that we can’t make room for any real science in the conversation.
If you don’t have natural fats in your diet, your body can’t even digest the proteins you eat after a certain amount. Excess proteins will be thrown off in urine.
Kidney stress is one of the results of a high protein diet without natural fats to help the body make use of that protein.
Natural fat regulates hormones and many body functions. And, if you are on a low carb diet, you need the natural fat to replace the carbohydrates to fuel your body’s activities.
Plus, if you eat a high protein diet without natural fats, excess protein can’t be converted to energy. It’s an ineffective fuel source and is needed in the body to build your body and provide structure for your cells.
The link between saturated fats and heart disease has been disproven. Based on faulty science, dietary fat is not a cause of obesity, heart disease, or other chronic diseases of the Western diet.
Plaque buildup in the arteries can be attributed to carb consumption which raises triglycerides and VLDL (the bad cholesterol). These are the precursors to a heart attack and can be directly attributable to a diet high in processed foods, excess carbohydrates and sugars.
There are least seven reasons to eat more saturated fats:
- Improved cardiovascular health. Eating sat fats raises the level of HDL, the so-called good cholesterol.
- Stronger bones. Sat fats are required for calcium to be incorporated into bone according to health expert, Mary Enig, PhD.
- Improved liver health. Sat fats protect the liver from toxic insults of alcohol and medications and can actually reverse the damage.
- Healthy lungs. Airspaces in the lungs must be coated with a fatty surfacant to properly breathe.
- Healthy brain. Your brain is made of fat and cholesterol. The brain needs saturated fats to function optimally.
- Proper Nerve Signaling. Certain sat fats found in butter, lard, coconut oil and palm oil function directly as signaling messengers that influence your metabolism.
- Strong immune system. Sat fats in butter and coconut oil play key roles in immune health. Loss of sat fats in the white blood cells hamper their ability to recognize and destroy foreign invaders including viruses, bacteria and fungi. Sat fats help protect against the development of cancer cells and infectious invaders.
Last but not least, no difference can be found in the risk of heart disease even with a high intake of saturated fats and eggs, which are, in fact, super foods and have NO effect on cholesterol.
